Republic of Ireland 1 Sweden 1- The opening match for the group of death, ended in a stalemate. With both the teams scoring one a piece.

Ireland dominated the match, with O’Shea missing a sitter in the first half. Hoolahan opened the account for the Irish 3 minutes into the second half. Ireland were looking to win the game, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic receiving less service, and not being his personal best. The big Swede however did set up the equalizer which was an own goal by Clark in 71st minute.
